Summer is upon us and that means it’s time to get your car in shape for the season. Whether you’re heading out of town on an epic road trip, driving around town getting supplies for a summer project, or just taking the kids to the park or pool throughout the week, you’re going to be spending more time out on the road. Here are some tips to keep your journeys safe and comfortable in the summer heat.

  • Change your oil and filter: It’s the most basic of car maintenance items, and the most important. A clean engine is more efficient and helps protect it from wear and tear. Hot weather conditions require more from the oil, so, if you’re due for a change it’s better sooner than later.

  • Check tire pressure: Under-filled tires add a lot of resistance and drastically reduce engine efficiency. They also wear out more quickly. Over-filled tires are also unsafe because they are more prone to losing traction. Especially before a long road trip, make sure all your tires are at manufacturer recommended levels. Don’t forget the spare!

  • Check tire tread: Balding tires not only lose traction but are also prone to breaking. This is a must before long trips.

  • Check wheel alignment: Have you noticed your car listing to one side? Or maybe your steering wheel vibrating? Bumpy roads and potholes can alter your vehicles alignment, which affects handling, tire wear, and fuel efficiency.

  • Inspect brakes: This one is probably self-explanatory. If you’re breaks are worn down, squealing, or responding abnormally, it’s probably time for a tune-up.

  • Check fluid levels: Your transmission, power steering, radiator, and windshield, all need special fluid to work properly. Fortunately, this check is commonly performed during most service appointments.

  • Check A/C: Also pretty self-explanatory. Summertime means elevated temps, so you don’t want your A/C to stop working when you need it most. Stay cool this summer by ensuring your A/C system is good to go.
